Chapter Six

“So no movie, I take it?” Rory asked, sounding genuinely disappointed.

“No, not today. I have some things to do. Can you just drop me by the house if you’re going somewhere else?”

“Sure. I have a class later anyway,” he said.

They drove along in silence for a few minutes. Emerson watched the green hills and craggy mountain ridges roll by them. Western Pennsylvania was beautiful in the spring—lush and wild.

“So, you don’t think she seems at all off?”

“Hmm?” Rory asked, looking like he was a thousand miles away.

Emerson studied his profile. He really was handsome—aquiline nose, strong jawline. Most women her age would swoon at the thought of marrying someone like him for money. Her? She wasn’t sure.

“Auntie Cate. She’s not herself.”

“I think she’s doing great for a woman who just had a stroke.” Rory shrugged.

“You’re quite sure of yourself and of your opinions, aren’t you?” Emerson leaned against the window, wanting to look at him and not wanting to. She sensed that he enjoyed her studying him. He was used to female attention.

“Not really. I’m just confident in who I am. I know who I am, what I like. Don’t you?” He gazed at her for a long moment before looking back at the road.

She shivered, feeling a stirring of attraction to him. “I think I do. I’m 23. I’m going to be an engineer if I can ever get a job. I mean, I already am one. I’ve done an internship. I just have to prove myself.” The words felt all wrong. He always put her on a defensive footing, it seemed.

“You will. I have the latest Pittsburgh Post Gazette in the backseat. You can start your job search there,” Rory said.

“Thanks. I will.” She reached for the newspaper.

“Can’t have my future wife unhappy and out of work,” he said.

She smacked his shoulder. “Cut it out.”

“Seriously, though. Think about it. Auntie Cate won’t be around forever. This was a pretty bad scare, you know?” Rory gripped the wheel tightly.

“Yes, but she’s 94. When it’s her time, it’s her time. I know she’s been restless since Raul died.”

“Of course, I agree. I just mean—”

“Yes, I know. You want to get your grubby hands on the house,” Emerson said, clicking her tongue in reproof.

“Hey, it’s not like that. I told you,” Rory said, turning into the driveway to Whispering House.

“Sure it’s not.”

He pulled up to the house, his mouth a tight line. The house glowered before them, a slate monster on a sunny day, looking as unhappy as he did.

“Whatever you say. Thanks for the ride. See you later.” She got out, content that she had won the upper hand in the discussion.

* * * *

Emerson hadn’t been lying about having things to do. She wanted to look around the house while Rory was out. Emerson didn’t want to seem like she was snooping, which she totally would be doing, but she did want to see if she could figure out where the whispering she had heard the night before came from.
